The renovation of public lighting in Karrantza Valley strengthens its commitment to sustainability and improves the quality of life for its inhabitants while respecting the beauty and uniqueness of its natural surroundings
VALLE DE KARRANTZA —24/1/2025— Located in the westernmost part of Enkarterri, Karrantza is the largest municipality in Bizkaia, spanning an area of 137.87 km². Its stunning landscape is made up of oak, beech, and holm oak forests, along with over 200 caves and chasms that highlight its geological richness. The valley is a biodiversity hotspot, offering numerous trails to explore its natural environment, such as the Armañón Natural Park and the famous Pozalagua Cave, renowned for its eccentric stalactites.
In this unique setting, Karrantza Valley has undertaken an ambitious public lighting renovation project, prioritizing energy efficiency, reducing light pollution, and enhancing visual comfort.
High-efficiency luminaires serving sustainability
The project involved the renovation of more than 1,000 luminaires, replacing a significant number of existing high-pressure sodium vapor (HPS) and metal halide (MH) fixtures with advanced LED technology from ATP Lighting. The installed models include:
- Villa XLA: Classic aesthetics that perfectly integrate with the valley’s architectural tradition.
- Siglo XLA: Ideal for preserving the historical charm of rural areas.
- Libra AC: Modern and efficient design, suitable for more functional spaces.
All luminaires are equipped with Comfort Diffuser®, an innovation that reduces glare and provides uniform and pleasant lighting, improving nighttime visibility for both pedestrians and drivers.
Energy savings and protection of the night sky
The lighting renovation has achieved significant energy savings, exceeding 70%, while drastically reducing light pollution through precise planning and the choice of a warm color temperature of 3000 K. This approach not only enhances visual comfort but also minimizes the impact on the nocturnal ecosystem, respecting the valley’s biodiversity and preserving the quality of its night skies.
Adaptation to the needs of a rural environment
The renovation project was designed with the specific characteristics of Karrantza Valley in mind, a rural area that values well-planned, efficient, and environmentally friendly lighting. In addition, ATP Lighting’s luminaires offer:
- High durability and resistance: Manufactured with polymeric materials that make them corrosion-resistant, the luminaires withstand adverse weather conditions and high humidity.
- Immunity against surges and electrostatic discharges (ESD): Ensuring reliable performance even under the most demanding conditions.
- Comprehensive 10-year warranty: Full coverage from the first unit, guaranteeing durable and sustainable performance.
A step toward a more sustainable future
The renovation of public lighting in Karrantza Valley not only enhances the safety and visual comfort of its inhabitants but also reinforces its commitment to sustainability and respect for its natural surroundings. This project exemplifies how lighting technology can harmoniously integrate into a rural space, preserving its identity while supporting more responsible development.
With initiatives like this, Karrantza positions itself as a benchmark for sustainable lighting in rural communities. It is a demonstration that moving forward into the future can be achieved without losing sight of the importance of protecting our past and natural environment.
