The new LED lighting achieves a much higher CRI than the previous HPS luminaires, an 11 % increase in uniformity, a significantly reduced ULOR and 77 % energy savings
PAMPLONA —9/3/2020— Vuelta del Castillo Park is Pamplona's iconic green area. These gardens, located on the citadel's glacis and covering 300,000 square meters, are widely used for walking and practicing outdoor activities. Recently, the Town Hall decided to upgrade the street lighting in this area, which consisted of high-pressure sodium vapor lamps.
The goals of the project were to improve lighting quality by increasing the color rendering index and uniformity, reducing light pollution and glare, and saving on power consumption and maintenance. It was also necessary to equip these new luminaires with a remote management system to control time profiles from the electric panel in order to adjust power for the various events and celebrations held in the park throughout the year.
There was a special requirement for this project: maintaining the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by sodium-vapor orange lighting, without incurring in this technology's excessive energy expenditure or its light bulbs' high upper light output ratio (ULOR). Besides, half of the Vuelta del Castillo walkway is part of the Way of St. James, so it was essential for this stretch to retain its traditional essence and charm. This was one of the most delicate matters, as it was necessary to achieve a high color rendering rate without sacrificing warmth.
Solution
After testing luminaires from different manufacturers and different color temperatures, the Metrópoli 2200 K LED polymer solution by ATP Iluminación was chosen. The luminaires incorporated Comfort Diffuser®, an innovation that eliminates glare for pedestrians and improves visual comfort, without impairing performance. The Metrópoli luminaires also incorporated a driver compatible with the remote management program chosen by the Town Hall, so the additional feature to control time profiles did not involve any additional cost.
In environments affected by abundant rainfall, these totally hermetic luminaires, the immunity to corrosion of the engineering technopolymers that make up their enclosures, and their 10-year warranty coverage were a decisive advantage.
Results
This new LED lighting achieves a much higher color rendering index than the previous sodium vapor luminaires, an 11% increase in uniformity, a significantly reduced ULOR and 77% energy savings.
▪️Previously: Technology: HPS | Power: 100 W | ULOR: >50 % | CRI: 20
| Uniformity: 32·%
▪️Now: Technology: LED | Power: 27 W | ULOR: 1.1 % | CRI: >70 | Uniformity: 43 %
| Energy savings: 77 %
