Modernization of public lighting in the Aragonese Pyrenees with sustainable technology
GAVÍN, VALLE DE TENA —14/2/2025— Located at the entrance of the Valle de Tena, just a few kilometers from Biescas, Gavín is a small town that combines the charm of traditional Pyrenean architecture with a privileged natural environment.
As part of the series of lighting renovations in the Valle de Tena, ATP has worked on modernizing Gavín’s public lighting, implementing efficient and sustainable solutions that enhance the quality of life for its residents and reinforce respect for the environment.
Thanks to this intervention, the municipality now benefits from a high-tech lighting system that optimizes energy efficiency, minimizes light pollution, and ensures durability in a demanding mountain climate.
Electrical safety and surge protection
Located in the Aragonese Pyrenees, Gavín is frequently exposed to electrical storms, which can cause power surges in the lighting network. To prevent these issues, Class II luminaires without grounding have been installed, preventing voltage spikes from atmospheric discharges and protecting electronic equipment.
Additionally, ATP’s exclusive polymeric materials eliminate the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD), a common problem in metal luminaires. While conventional systems accumulate surface charge that can result in internal discharges damaging components, ATP luminaires completely eliminate this risk, ensuring a prolonged lifespan with no premature failures.
Reducing light pollution and protecting the night sky
Gavín’s new lighting system uses 2200 K ultra-warm LED, emitting less than 1.28% blue light at wavelengths below 440 nm. This reduction minimizes atmospheric light dispersion, preventing artificial sky glow and reducing the impact on wildlife and circadian rhythms.
The lighting design has been precisely tailored to avoid over-illumination and ensure that light is projected only where it is needed. This not only contributes to energy efficiency but also protects the natural environment of the Valle de Tena, aligning with Starlight criteria that promote responsible lighting compatible with astrotourism.
Aesthetic integration and tailored solutions
To respect the architectural identity of the municipality, Villa XLA luminaires with Difusor Confort® have been installed in low-height areas. This classic model seamlessly integrates with the rustic aesthetic and stone façades of the town while reducing glare and providing uniform and comfortable lighting.
For road and street lighting, the Enur L luminaire was selected, a high-efficiency fixture designed to optimize light distribution. Thanks to prior photometric studies and customized manufacturing, each luminaire has been adapted to the specific needs of the municipality, achieving exceptionally high uniformity that allows for better visibility with lower light levels, thereby reducing energy consumption without compromising safety.
The Gavín City Council has particularly highlighted this aspect, emphasizing that the new lighting system allows for significantly better visibility with less power, demonstrating the quality of the lighting design and the effectiveness of the optics used in the project.
Durability and reliability in extreme conditions
Like the rest of the Valle de Tena, Gavín faces severe climatic conditions, including heavy precipitation, frequent frosts, and extreme temperatures. ATP luminaires are designed to operate without alterations in this demanding environment thanks to their IP66+ hermeticity, preventing water and dust ingress and ensuring stable and clean lighting at all times.
Additionally, corrosion-proof polymeric materials guarantee an extended lifespan without deterioration, while the comprehensive 10-year warranty ensures maximum performance even in extreme climates, significantly reducing long-term maintenance costs.
A model of responsible lighting
With this project, Gavín reaffirms its commitment to efficient lighting that respects the environment and aligns with the values of the Valle de Tena. The lighting renovation not only improves the safety and visual comfort of its residents but also protects its night sky and optimizes energy consumption, establishing itself as a sustainability benchmark in the region.
