ATP Lighting and MicaMed Limited, over a decade illuminating Malta

LA VALETA —9/2/2024— In the heart of the Mediterranean, the island of Malta stands as a natural and cultural treasure. However, its beauty is not without challenges. Strong winds laden with sand and an aggressive saline environment rapidly deteriorated the existing metal lighting fixtures on the island, requiring constant maintenance expenses or replacements. The Maltese administration thus faced a persistent and costly problem that demanded a radically different solution.

In this scenario, ATP Lighting, in collaboration with its local partner MicaMed Limited, proposed an alternative tailored to the island's needs: complete lighting sets composed of columns and luminaires, made of engineering technical polymers, immune to corrosion, and resistant to degradation from exposure to the elements. These sets required no maintenance and came with a comprehensive 10-year warranty, even in the harsh conditions unique to the island.

After initial tests confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed solutions and certified savings in maintenance and replacement costs, ATP, supported by MicaMed, became a lighting supplier for Malta. Thus began a collaboration that has now lasted for over a decade. Throughout this time, ATP and MicaMed have installed over 3000 lighting points across the island, including its most emblematic areas, such as the historic St. Paul's Square. In addition to the corrosion immunity provided by ATP's polymeric materials, the integral IP66+ sealing (extended to the entire enclosure, not just the optical assembly, as is customary in the sector) has been a determining factor, preventing salt penetration into the circuits and inside the diffuser. This ensures faultless operation over time and stable performance, without dirt hindering light flow.

Furthermore, ATP lighting installed in Malta is calibrated with appropriate light levels to ensure safety, and with customized optics that direct light exclusively where needed to minimize ULOR (upward light output ratio) and power. This rational application of light and ATP's LED high efficiency has allowed for energy savings exceeding 75% compared to previous discharge technology.
