A strategic shift toward lighting solutions that maximize energy savings and reduce environmental impact
VALLADOLID —14/10/2024— The town of Boecillo, located 17 km south of Valladolid, faced the challenge of modernizing its public lighting network, which used high-pressure sodium vapor (HPSV) and metal halide (MH) fixtures. This system was not only energy-inefficient but also costly to maintain, providing uneven lighting levels, especially in the historic center.
Project objective
Boecillo aimed to reduce its energy consumption and carbon footprint through sustainable, efficient lighting technology. The goal was to improve lighting uniformity, enhance nighttime visibility, beautify public spaces, and reduce CO₂ emissions.
Strategy and execution
ATP Lighting developed a customized lighting study tailored to the town's aesthetic and lighting needs. Key aspects of the intervention included:
Luminaires replacement: Outdated luminaires, with 70 W in low-height areas and 150 W for installations over five meters, were replaced with advanced LED models with power levels ranging from 25 W to 80 W, depending on the specific requirements of each area. ATP supplied Villa XLA, Alameda A, and Aire® 3 Series luminaires with Comfort Diffuser®, as well as Aire® 5 Series with a transparent diffuser for high-mount applications.
Aesthetic consistency: To preserve visual harmony, especially in the historic center, ATP selected LED luminaires with designs that blend with the existing urban landscape, achieving visual integration without compromising performance.
Optimized light distribution: Precise optics and the BR-8 arm allowed for efficient orientation of the luminaires, achieving uniform light distribution.
Implemented solutions by ATP Iluminación
Advanced LED lighting technology
The chosen luminaires, including Villa XLA, Alameda A, and Aire® 3 Series and 5 Series, stand out for their high energy efficiency, resistance to extreme weather, and low upper hemispheric flux (FHS), ensuring that light is effectively directed without causing light pollution.
Precision optics and visual comfort
ATP’s optical technology minimizes glare, providing uniform lighting that respects nocturnal wildlife. The Comfort Diffuser® technology in Villa XLA, Alameda A, and Aire® 3 Series enhances visual comfort and safety perception in urban areas. The 3000K warm color temperature combines a low blue light component with a high color rendering index, presenting colors in a natural way.
Durability and low maintenance
Made from technical polymers and anti-corrosive materials, ATP’s luminaires offer a lifespan of over 100,000 hours and require minimal maintenance. They come with a comprehensive 10-year warranty, the longest full coverage in the industry, significantly reducing operational costs.
Project results
Energy savings: The switch to LED technology has reduced energy consumption by over 70%, leading to a substantial decrease in the municipality's energy expenditure.
CO₂ emissions reduction: CO₂ emissions have been significantly lowered, supporting Boecillo’s sustainability goals.
Improved lighting quality: The installation of high-efficiency luminaires and precision optics has enhanced lighting uniformity and quality, benefiting both pedestrians and drivers. Through studies conducted in different areas, ATP optimized lighting levels with the BR-8 arm for better orientation at higher points.
Unified light color: The new lighting system unifies the color temperature with LED 3000 K, eliminating the mix of conventional technologies like metal halides and sodium vapor, thereby enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of public spaces.
Reduced maintenance costs: With durable, highly resistant luminaires, the town has successfully lowered maintenance costs, optimizing the budget allocated to public lighting.
Overall project summary
The public lighting renovation in Boecillo is a successful example of how investing in LED technology and ATP Lighting's tailored solutions can transform a town’s energy efficiency, improve urban environments, and promote sustainability. Boecillo now stands as a benchmark in responsible resource management, reinforcing its commitment to the environment and the quality of life of its residents.
