The retrofit project preserves the original eight-sided Munich model street lights and achieves energy savings of 60% with ultra-warm color temperature
PAMPLONA —24/7/2020— The Pamplona Town Hall recently decided to renovate the classical outdoor lighting in La Taconera gardens, the oldest park in the city. A natural space of 90,000 square meters located around walls that are unique for their varied architectural elements. Among the diverse wildlife inhabiting its moats, it is possible to find deer, fallow deer, peacocks, ducks, swans and pheasants, among other animals. Apart from its landscape and natural value, this park, which already figured in the city's maps in 1719, is a much appreciated leisure area frequented by citizens.
Project needs and objectives
At that time, La Taconera gardens had an outdoor lighting installation composed of octagonal, cast iron Múnich lanterns: classical and ornamental pieces that are part of the traditional aesthetics of the park, as well as an important element of its history, identity and attraction. As the town planning technician in charge of maintenance explains, the Town Hall proposed to keep these decorative lanterns intact, which are no longer manufactured, and to upgrade their gas-discharge light source (HPS lamps) to LED technology without altering their enclosure. This is the reason why a retrofit solution was required.
The objectives of the project, once the need to respect the enclosures became clear, were to: improve the overall quality of light by upgrading uniformity and color rendering index; reduce light pollution by controlling the upper hemispherical flux; and save on power consumption. All those objectives were to be met while using an ultra-warm color temperature to protect local wildlife. In addition, since the installation included control panels with light flux regulators operating throughout the power line, it was essential that the electronic devices powering the new LED units was compatible with this system.
Solution
ATP Iluminación's KitLED® was chosen for this project. It is a system designed to quickly and easily upgrade any luminaire from any manufacturer to the firm's LED technology. This device has all the characteristic advantages of ATP, including advanced thermal management through the use of Laminar Heatsink®, maximum electrical robustness (Class II regardless of the luminaire in which it is housed and complementary ESD protective device), comprehensive IP66 rating for all connections, and a 10-year warranty.
A total of 212 x 75 W KitLED® systems (131 of which were adjusted to 65 W for the narrowest areas) were installed to replace 100 to 150 W HPS street fixtures. As required, all electronic devices were configured to be compatible with the light flux regulator system in the control panels. As well, an ultra-warm 2200 K color temperature, which ATP has been recommending for years and is gradually becoming a benchmark due to its environmental benefits, was chosen. This color temperature respects the rhythms of the wildlife and preserves the cozy atmosphere of the HPS but with a much higher color rendering.
KitLED® has proven to be the effective solution for those instances where the goal is to improve energy efficiency and lighting quality while preserving the original lighting unit, usually because of its aesthetic value and its contribution to the character of the place. This product is designed to be easily adapted to any luminaire, regardless of its peculiarities or age.
Results
The new lighting system has saved approximately 60 % in energy, with light levels around 10 lux, a color rendering index that has increased from 20 to over 70, and an average uniformity of 55 %. On the other hand, the ULOR has been reduced by almost 75 %, dropping from more than 50 % to 13 %. Take into account these data applies to the context of La Taconera Park, which has very lush vegetation that strongly shields any stray light ray. That means the solution adopted meets the most demanding requirements on ULOR control.
The technical precision of the project and the use of the KitLED® have generated results very similar to those if the luminaires were to be fully replaced, with an overall lighting quality much higher than before.
-
Before: HPS | Power 100-150 W | ULOR >50 % | CRI 20 | Average uniformity 30 %
-
Now: KitLED® M 2200 K | Power 75 W (regulated to 65 W in areas allowing it) |
ULOR 13 % | CRI >70 | Average uniformity 55 % | Energy savings: 60 %
