The new luminaires achieve ULOR 0 % and overall energy savings of 73 %
PAMPLONA —7/4/2021— The Town Hall of Valle de Aranguren, Navarra, recently completed the renovation of Mutilva's outdoor lighting. A town with more than 10,000 people, it had so far been illuminated using high-pressure sodium lighting (HPS), a technology with excessive power and energy consumption by current standards. The upper light output ratio (ULOR) of such lighting, plus its limited color rendering index (CRI) were miles away from what cutting-edge LED solutions can offer today.
The goals of the project were to increase the efficiency of the installation, control light pollution and glare as well as improve the overall quality of lighting through an increase in CRI and uniformity. To achieve a significant reduction in light emitted into the atmosphere, it was not only necessary to eliminate the installed ULOR (of the luminaire itself), but it was also key to reduce power and output, and direct light only where it was necessary, in order to correct overlighting and light reflections on the pavement.
Solution
After studying the needs of the project, the Metrópoli LP LED model with a color temperature of 3000 K was chosen. A total of 87 luminaires were installed (72 35 W, five 35 W dimmed to 30 W, and 10 15 W), with a flat safety glass enclosure designed to provide a value of FHSinst = 0 %, while maintaining at the same time the IK10 mechanical resistance standard throughout the enclosure, typical of ATP products. Reducing power and output, in addition to using optics adjusted to each area's peculiarities, made it possible to correct the excess light, therefore reducing its diffusion and reflection towards the sky.
In addition, a warm color temperature of 3000 K was chosen, which combines a moderate percentage of blue spectral component (the one that spreads more easily in the atmosphere due to the Rayleigh scattering phenomenon) with CRI: >70, much higher than that offered by HPS discharge technology (<20 CRI). This radiant flux composition, combined with the elimination of the installed ULOR and the aforementioned reduction in power and output, drastically decreased the amount of light being emitted into the atmosphere, i.e. light pollution. In this way, this new lighting has fulfilled its goal of contributing to the preservation of the night sky's natural darkness.
Finally, compared to the previous installation, the difference in terms of energy is remarkable. The large reduction in luminaire power, achieved thanks to the LED's high luminous efficacy and a rational and efficient use of light, made us achieve 73% overall energy savings measured in kW⋅h.
Summary
Luminaire: Metrópoli LP LED | CCT: 3000 K | Power: 72 35 W luminaires, five 35 W luminaires dimmed to 30 W, and 10 15 W luminaires | FHSinst: 0 % | CRI: >70 | Energy savings: 73 %
