The new LED luminaires with 2200 K ultra-warm color temperature achieve energy savings of 65% and correct over-illumination
NOREÑA —17/6/2021— The Town Hall of Noreña, Asturias, has recently renewed the entire outdoor lighting of the homonymous villa, made up by more than 1200 luminaires. ATP Iluminación has developed customized solutions for this large-scale project to achieve an optimum result in every corner of the town.
The villa's lighting consisted of a heterogeneous mixture of 100-200 W high pressure sodium vapour (HPS) and metal-halide (MH) lanterns which consume an excessive amount of energy and generate much more light than necessary, increasing the light output ratio (ULOR) in the upper hemisphere and light reflection towards the sky.
Goals
This project was carefully planned from the beginning in order to obtain the most rational and efficient lighting possible. It can be adjusted according to the needs of each area in the villa, primarily avoiding over-illumination. With this in mind, ATP carried out more than 400 light studies in close collaboration with the engineering team in charge of the project. Then, optimal lighting solutions for the different areas of the town were designed and manufactured.
In addition to maximizing efficiency and reducing power and flux, being a quiet residential village with recreational areas, a warm or ultra-warm color temperature was required to provide a high color rendering rate while respecting circadian cycles with a minimum percentage of blue component in the radiant spectral flux. Given the region's rainy climate, the product needed to be completely waterproof, corrosion-resistant and have a wide-coverage warranty.
Solution
After carrying out more than 400 light studies in collaboration with the engineering team and determining exactly the ideal lighting parameters for each area, ATP developed different ad hoc luminaires based on its classic and modern product families, blending different optic and light level combinations to obtain ideal solutions.
Overall, more than 1,200 100, 150 and 200 W HPS and MH luminaires have been replaced by LED lighting units of different wattage (mostly 35 W and 75 W) distributed along various ATP models, including Aire® floodlights and KitLED® retrofit equipment. Most of the luminaires installed include Comfort Diffuser®, a company innovation that reduces glare for pedestrians and improves visual comfort without affecting the LED's performance.
In order to achieve an even greater adaptation to the particular needs of each environment, the new lighting's drivers include a simple feature for adjusting light levels by means of a portable device. This feature enables the installer to correct the effects of small changes that may arise during the execution of the task with a single touch, ensuring that the lighting will be exactly as planned in the studies.
After analyzing the needs of the project, a 2200 K ultra-warm color temperature was chosen, which respects the circadian cycles of people and animals and has a high CRI.
Results
By customizing the lighting units based on detailed light studies, uniformity of up to 80% has been achieved and power and energy consumption have been reduced by 65%. Flux reduction, together with the use of optics adapted to each context, have also corrected the over-illumination that existed in the previous installation, reducing light diffusion and reflection towards the sky.
On the other hand, the 2200 K ultra-warm color temperature achieves a CRI >70, much higher than HPS (CRI <20). It also emits a spectral radiant flux of only 1.3% below 440 nm wavelength, which means that the blue component (the one that spreads more easily in the atmosphere due to Rayleigh scattering) is minimal. This radiant flux composition, combined with the power reduction, has resulted in a drastic reduction of light pollution.
Finally, the unique characteristics of the product chosen, such as its immunity to corrosion provided by its engineering technopolymers, together with the IP66 throughout its enclosure, provide long-term reliability and resistance against abundant rainfall, which is very aggressive on outdoor lighting. As with all ATP products, the installed luminaires come with a comprehensive 10-year warranty, ensuring that the investment is protected.
