To face the harsh environmental conditions, lighting resistant to corrosion and vandalism, immune to surges, and completely sealed was required
ATP Lighting, a specialist in coastal area lighting, presents another successful coastal lighting project, this time in the municipality of Nigrán, Galicia (Spain). The intervention involved replacing the old VSAP discharge lanterns with classic-looking Siglo XLA LED models, equipped with Comfort® Diffuser to reduce glare.
As is customary with ATP, the renewal was carried out with precise light levels to ensure safety without over-illumination, using customized optics that direct light only where needed. This, combined with the high efficiency of LED, has allowed for over 70% energy savings compared to the previous discharge lighting. Similarly, a warm color temperature, pleasing to the eye, with a moderate percentage of blues in its spectral radiance, has been chosen.
Unique features for challenging environments
Corrosion resistance has been key in this project. ATP luminaires, made with technical engineering polymers, come with a comprehensive 10-year warranty, even in extreme conditions of humidity, temperature, and salinity. This feature significantly contributes to cost savings in maintenance, especially in coastal environments, providing a competitive advantage over other proposals.
Another fundamental feature for the project is the total IP66+ sealing grade of the luminaires, meaning the entire enclosure is sealed, not just the optical assembly, as is customary in the industry. This total sealing, created by a continuous sealing gasket, differentiates ATP's IP66+ from the conventional IP66, preventing insects, dust, dirt, moisture, or salt from entering the diffuser. This keeps the luminaire's performance unchanged and saves maintenance costs over the years.
In a climate where storms are not uncommon, the surge immunity of ATP lighting has provided a decisive advantage. Being Class II by nature and not needing grounding, which is the main path for atmospheric discharges, ATP luminaires are completely isolated from this threat.
Unlike other metallic Class II luminaires, ATP polymeric luminaires are also unaffected by surges caused by electrostatic discharges. In metallic luminaires, the enclosure gradually charges due to air friction, and the current seeks the path of least resistance to propagate, which is through the metal and into the luminaire, resulting in driver failure. With ATP products, this situation cannot occur, as the enclosure is made of insulating engineering polymers with a dielectric strength exceeding 22,000 volts.
Finally, the new lighting also addresses the challenge of vandalism, which is a fixed cost in many municipalities. The installed luminaires have an IK10+ mechanical resistance, meaning they pass impact tests of over 50 joules (more than twice the requirement of the international standard IEC 62262 to achieve the maximum resistance grade, IK10, which is achieved with 20 joules).
