Villanúa, a beacon of lighting sustainability, honored at the prestigious LIT Lighting Design Awards 2024

The project developed by ATP for this municipality in the Aragonese Pyrenees stands out as a model of innovation and sustainability in public lighting

SWITZERLAND —12/12/2024— The lighting renovation project in Villanúa, led by ATP Lighting in collaboration with the local municipal council, has been honored with an Honorable Mention at the LIT Lighting Design Awards 2024, one of the most internationally recognized competitions in the field of lighting design.

With more than 800 projects submitted from 58 countries, the LIT Awards celebrate creativity and the transformative impact of lighting designs that shape spaces and communities. Villanúa's project was selected for its comprehensive approach to sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental preservation. The following documentary details the project through the words of the authorities and professionals involved, including Susana Malón (Lumínica Ambiental), a renowned physicist specializing in light and light pollution:

A renovation focused on sustainability and energy savings

The Villanúa lighting renovation replaced over 1,000 outdated discharge lamps with cutting-edge LED technology, achieving a 70% reduction in energy consumption. This initiative not only lowers the municipality’s carbon footprint but also minimizes light pollution through the use of luminaires with an ultra-warm color temperature of 2200 K, emitting just 1.28% blue light. This protects natural circadian rhythms and local biodiversity, crucial for progressing toward Starlight certification, which positions Villanúa as a prime destination for astronomical tourism.

In addition, the lighting system incorporates the Comfort Diffuser®, patented by ATP, which reduces glare and enhances visual well-being for both residents and visitors.

Durability and state-of-the-art technology adapted to mountain conditions

The luminaire design prioritizes resilience to the harsh weather conditions of the Pyrenees, including low temperatures, storms, snow, and corrosion caused by road salt. Manufactured using technical polymeric materials, the luminaires are immune to electrostatic discharge (ESD), ensuring reliability and longevity. This immunity to power surges has resolved a recurring issue in the area, significantly reducing maintenance costs.

A positive impact for the community and the environment

The new lighting system not only enhances urban aesthetics and street safety but also transforms the nighttime environment, enabling residents and tourists to enjoy starry skies and unique stargazing experiences.

Guillermo Redrado, Vice President of ATP Lighting, stated: “This recognition is a testament to the commitment of ATP and Villanúa to sustainability and innovation. We have demonstrated how collaboration between the public and private sectors can deliver sustainable solutions that benefit both people and the natural environment.”
